For anyone curious to learn about the process of working artists in Philadelphia, mark your calendar now for October 5-6 and 19-20 when the Philadelphia Open Studio Tours (POST) return for the 14th year.
For two weekends in October, POST tours expose the inner workings of Philadelphia’s creative spaces to the public in the biggest event of its kind in the Philadelphia area, and one of the premier open studio tour events in the entire country.
A program produced in conjunction with The Center for Emerging Visual Artists, the tours not only make engaging with Philadelphia’s professional artists super accessible, but also allow participants to craft a tour based solely on personal interests.
In 2013, art lovers can choose their own adventure on October 5 and 6 in the spaces east of Broad Street, and then on October 19 and 20 in the studios west of Broad Street. The tours run from noon-6 p.m. on both weekends, both days.

In addition to the tours, POST also hosts a number of special events during the Open Studio Tours festival season. From an artist reception at Christ Church Neighborhood House on October 4 to tours with the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts’ MFA students, more than a dozen events fill the calendar. But this year, local enthusiasts don’t have to wait to take in the works of incredible local artists. Thanks to Made in Philly, look for large-scale images of artwork to take over traditional advertising spaces like bus shelters, rail platforms and billboards. The campaign offers some awesome, well-deserved exposure to the artists and makers of Philadelphia’s ongoing creative renaissance.
Keep an eye out for these public showcases of the oft-unseen locally produced visual art, which connects each work displayed to the neighborhood (sometimes even the block) where it was created.
Then, come October, visit the studios of the artists who made them.
